“Mycelium Running” – Paul Stamets

Posted by Jake

In the video above…Mycologist…Paul Stamets…explains the many benefits of mushrooms.
While growing up…the only awareness I had of mushrooms was that they came on pizza…   but it appears there’s much more to them than that!!

For the last year….we’ve been experimenting with the “noble mushrooms..also known as the “polypore mushrooms”..or tree mushrooms…because they’re usually found growing in forests… on dying or fallen trees…or old logs and stumps.

From amazing nutritional benefits….to growing food…..to restoring forests to the natural state…to environmental clean up…they have many gifts to offer us!!

We love them so much that we consume them almost daily…with amazing results!!

We’re currently learning to identify and seek out these special medicines in the wild….a long with herbs and natural springs!  We think we may have found some Chaga and Coriolus on the mountain near our home last week, while hunting for new springs…more on that in future posts….!

If what Paul Stamets had to say…interested you…check out “Mycelium Running“..it’s FULL of inspiring information!!

also..check out fungi.com - Paul’s site for selling mushroom spawns and cultures…as well as great mushroom blends to consume and use in your garden!!

I’m also looking forward to working more closely with fungi in growing food…right now we’re just using… mychorizzal fungi

We also really like the single mushrooms and 5 mushroom complex.. from mushroomscience.com

  1. Whats with this book? I’ve seen it popping up all over the Blogosphere and it seems like ever since my friend borrowed it a few weeks ago fungus and mushroom related people and issues have shown up as well.

The friend I metioned and myself are starting a community garden/education field and were in the process of determining how we can incorporate mushrooms other then outright growing them for food, the book is a real inspiration but with our climate it might be abit tough to figure out….

But anyway good read and thanks for spreading the word!

  2. Lee…hello..thanks for checking out the site…sounds like you’re studying the same things we are…

The book IS amazing isn’t it? SO much information in there…it will take a while to ingest it all and apply it. I’m working on the same thing..how do I best work with mycellium in the garden..or encourage it’s natural growth.

So far in my research..it appears that.. at least.. starting with using mychorrizal fungi when planting trees, plants etc..really encourages growth and that natural symbyosis between the plants and fungi…the mychorizzal spores are available everywhere…we’re currently using spores we purchased from groworganic.com

Sounds like fun.. doing a community garden!! I’d like to get one going around here! Happy Growing!!
