Growing Dome update…CRAZY SWISS CHARD SEED!!

Posted by Jake. View Comments

Here’s the video update from the GROWING DOME, as of a few days ago.  An update on the FOOD FOREST is coming soon…

The chard plants are getting enormous..as you’ll see.  I’m waiting for the seeds to mature…before I collect them.  Have you read this book??  It’s such a great tool, if… you want to learn to save your own seeds or just for a good read..!!  It’s packed with great historical references and useful info.  Great book!

Seed to Seed: Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners

It says…that… “SWISS CHARD (Beta vulgaris) stalks can grow a seed stalk 4′ tall and are usually harvested when the majority of the seed clusters have turned light brown.  These seeds have a different structure from other gardens seeds.  Each seed is actually a group of flowers that is fused together by the flower petals. This forms a multigerm cluster which usually contains two to five seeds.” –  Seed to Seed by Suzanne Ashworth

Here’s the cool thing.  The chards in the Dome, are all heirloom varieties, which should have just pollinated each other…. because of the fans…and isolated environment…. resulting in some very cool new strains of

SWISS CHARD….I HOPE!!

Enjoy the tour….it’s time for tomatoes!!!!

Heads up…Goji Berry is a Local!

Posted by Jake. View Comments

Tis the season…to be hunting GOJI BERRY!

Been on the lookout on my hikes around these parts, hoping this is the year…to find that elusive, yet ever present GOJI BERRY.  In the video, you can hear David mention 15 varieties found in the southwestern deserts.  I’m seeing them listed in local herb/plant books too!  This video will show you what you’re looking for….

For the Utah wildcrafters, some of the varieties mentioned a lot, are LYCIUM cooperi, LYCIUM andersonii, and LYCIUM pallidum, keep an eye out, and if you spot one, shoot me an email…!!!  Would LOVE to grow the local strains a long with their Asian brothers.

Happy hunting….they’re out there!

Making Raw Kefir with…. Yardsnacker

Posted by Jake. View Comments

Sam…the Yardsnacker….shares his method for preparing Raw Kefir, which if you haven’t tried home made kefir yet…oh my goodness…this stuff is PURE JOY-  for the stomach flora and neurotransmitters in the bowel..and WOW….does it feel good!!  Especially when you make the effort to prepare it…yourself!!  Just like growing plants in your own soil….it’s so rewarding to the body mind and soul!!

Packed with enzymes, protein, and minerals…it’s like nothing I’ve ever consumed.

POWERFUL FOOD FOR THE BODY!!

Whatever happened to the role of fermented foods in our diet?   Hmmm…replaced by dead pasteurized versions sold under glowing lights in grocery stores…like so many other sources of once…life giving food.   So glad I’ve come into association with these little organisms…they’re FULL OF LIFE…and they share that with YOU!!   It’s felt..when you consume them.

Thanks Yardsnacker for the demo!!!  Your garden is ROCKIN this year!!!!

Thanks Anthony Anderson…for the Kefir Grains…they’re very loved!!!

Shawn Jadrnicek – Urban Permaculture Institute of the Southeast

Shawn’s design, is what I aspire to create someday.  He’s using his grey-water, directing it into ponds, and growing mushrooms on logs!  Two things on my hit list!!

These videos have so much info in them…I’ve watched them a few times each, and am still picking up new insights.  Love the way he uses all water to his advantage…!!

This is urban permaculture at its best!!

**Check out these first 3 videos from 2008….then look at the change…in the last 2 videos, a year later…in 2009.

Emilia Hazelip – A Fukuoka Inspired Permaculture Garden

Posted by Jake. View Comments

This garden really inspires me…and offers a TON of information…to digest!!

Emilia Hazelip developed her own permaculture gardening “style”  based on the work of Masanobu Fukuoka, and called it: synergistic gardening it’s very… beautiful!!

I LOVE..watching these videos…for a GOOD TIME!!

One thing…I’ve applied from these videos, that’s really helped in plant/soil health…has been the use of straw mulch…or any good mulch…then, chopping and…. leaving in place, “green” plant material… to decompose.  MULCH, MULCH, MULCH!  It’s actually kind of fun…to help the cycle a long!!!

On my way to get more straw today…and scoop some fresh spring water… while I’m at it!  Herb hunting season is here too…have a few in mind… I’m stalking this year!!!

Have FUN…creating your own garden/food forest!
